We are very happy and honoured to announce that the article “Bidding on a peer-to-peer energy market – A field study”, co-authored by current and former members of the Bits to Energy Labs in Zurich and Nuremberg, has been published in Information Systems Research, one of the flagship journals of the Information Systems discipline.

The article by Anselma Wörner, Verena Tiefenbeck, Felix Wortmann, Arne Meeuw, Liliane Ableitner, Elgar Fleisch, and Inês Azevedo reports the results of the first empirical study worldwide that analyzed bidding behavior in a real-world peer-to-peer (P2P) energy market, in which users bid for solar energy via an auction mechanism. For the duration of an entire year, users could interact with the market using a web app. The market outcomes reveal that P2P energy markets can indeed have a positive impact on balancing demand and supply, thereby addressing the fundamental challenge of distributed renewable energy systems.

Being able to share these groundbreaking results with the scientific community and public represents the culmination of the ambitious “Quartierstrom” project that two teams at ETH Zurich and the University of St. Gallen had set up in collaboration with EW Walenstadt as primary partner.
